    • Out now on iOS and Android

Solving mysteries, or rewriting history, is one of the many joys of a narrative game. And one of the latest to hit the genre is the crime-solving thriller Crime Boat 2. We’re not exactly sure what CrimeBot is, but you play as a detective in the vein of Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, solving cases around the world. Or Inspector Clouseau, depending on your skill level.

Crimebot 2 is part of a new breed of detective games that we can almost call Call-of-Cthulhu-likes (tabletop, not video game). You are presented with a case, a series of clues and documents, and from there, you must unravel the mystery. No face reading tricks where you try to see if your suspect is lying and unfortunately no detective vision to help you.

Of course, we can’t vouch for how well it all works or how immersive it is, but as a primary selling point, it’s pretty decent.

Now we have to give a caveat, which is that we strongly suspect (if we’re all being like spies) that there is any AI art in this game. For us that’s enough to detract from an otherwise promising concept, but if it’s not right for you, then to each his own. Hopefully this kind of generative tech hasn’t made its way into the cases themselves.

Suppose you want to see what other crime thriller games are available on mobile. In that case, we can point you to the recently released installment of the Modes series, Mode 2: Secrets and Death for a more Danganronpa-like detective experience.
