The beloved 90s-inspired film Twister is coming back to the theaters nearly thirty years after its original release. And instead of being re-released in theaters, a full-blown sequel, Twisters, is due to be released in the summer of 2024. Director Lee Issac Chung and writer Mark L. Smith are the group to create the long-awaited sequel.

The critically acclaimed Minari received several Oscar nominations, while Smith was one of the co-writers for The Revenant, which finally earned his first Oscar for Leonardo DiCaprio. It was widely remembered that as the original Twister was released, the film received around $500 million at the box office and was applauded for its special effects and its all-star cast.

Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes and Philip Seymour Hoffman played the role of storm chasers. The plot for the sequel is limited at the moment, but Universal claims that the new film will create a new chapter for the original actors.

Not to mention that this is the first time that Universal has tried to breathe new life into an old franchise. No time will tell if Twisters have what it takes to satisfy or surprise the original’s expectations.
