Piscateella says Mortal Kombat 1 was September’s best-selling game on PlayStation platforms, coming in second on Xbox and PC, where Starfield came in first. Mortal Kombat 1 ranked third on Switch despite the game’s disastrous launch state on the platform.

Elsewhere in Sarcana’s report, U.S. spending on video game content, hardware and accessories rose 10 percent from a year ago, totaling $4.5 billion. Piscatella says increased spending on materials and accessories offset the 8 percent decrease in hardware. Year-to-date U.S. spending on video game products rose 2% to $39.4 billion. He also noted that increases in digital premium download spending on consoles and PC drove most of the growth in September 2023 spending.

Despite Starfield’s clear success in September, the PlayStation 5 remained the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollar sales. The Xbox Series X/S is again second in both measures. According to Piscatella, the PS5 is also leading 2023 hardware sales in both units and dollars, and year-to-date hardware spending is 10% higher than this time last year, at $3.7 billion.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 DualSense controller was last month’s best-selling accessory, and accessory spending during the month increased 11% compared to September 2022, reaching $197 million.
