Nintendo | Instagram – Charles Martinet
Gaming fans have been familiar with Mario for a very long time, bringing his recognisable aplomb and excitement to each of his games. Though we’ve had a few different actors step up to the plate to become the plumber (with varying degrees of success – sorry, Bob Hoskins), nobody has ever been able to do it like Charles Martinet.
Martinet’s distinct vocals have been synonymous with Mario since 1991, who has been comfortable in his shoes for 32 years. But now, it has been officially confirmed that the iconic voice of Mario (and Luigi), will be officially stepping down as the plumber’s voice actor.
Charles Martinet is stepping down as Mario
A new statement from Nintendo has revealed that Martinet will be transitioning into a new role at the company as their Mario Ambassador, but will no longer voice the character.
“It has been an honour working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years and we want to thank and celebrate him.” reads the statement. “Please keep an eye out for a special video message from Shigeru Miyamoto and Charles himself, which we will post at a later date.“
Is Charles Martinet playing Mario in Super Mario Bros Wonder?
This comes after many fans had theorised that the voice actor for Mario in Super Mario Bros. Wonder wasn’t actually Martinet – but his involvement in this game is still unconfirmed.
Dissecting voice clips from the game, gamers have pointed out that there are some moments where Mario sounds different – and it looks like he actually could be.
It’s sad to say goodbye to Martinet, but it’s still great news that he’s sticking around with Nintendo to help bolster the plumber’s legacy. So long, sweet prince.
