Hades 2 is now available in early access and one of the many questions players may have is whether Zagreus, the protagonist of the first game and brother of Melinoe, appears in this sequel.
Please note that there are some spoilers for the later parts of Hades 2. If you want to enjoy the game without spoilers, I recommend you turn back now.
Is Zagreus present in Hades 2?
Yes, Zagreus is somewhat present in Hades 2, but not in the way you think. At the start of the game he is seen in a painting in Crossroads. He shows Melinoe when he was a baby alongside Hades, Persephone, and of course Zagreus. However, he looks quite different as we see him in the first game. Simply walking past the painting will cause Melinoe to say a few words.
Towards the end of the game, when Melinoe confronts Chronos, a cutscene will appear where you can briefly play as Hades himself in the House of Hades. We see what happened when Chronos took over and you will eventually find him in a room. You will see many frozen characters and one of them is none other than Zagreus.
It’s the same character model from the first game so it’s definitely him. He appears to be in an attack pose, so it appears that he was trying to attack someone, probably Chronos, when he was frozen.
Chronos says that he has “simply imprisoned them in a time that will never pass,” so we can be sure that Zagreus is not dead. We don’t know if Melinoe will meet Zagreus in Hades 2’s life cycle, but for now, we are assured of his fate in the game.
