In Hades 2, you can obtain a variety of reagents that you can spend to obtain new weapons or craft items. One of these reagents is an element called Cinder, and it is necessary to obtain the Umbral Flames weapons.

As Hades 2 is currently in early access, the location I found to get Cinder could change before the game’s full release. I will update this post if the information here changes or if I find more Cinder locations to share with you.

So far, the only place I’ve found Cinder is as a reward for defeating Hecate, the Guardian of Erebus. Hecate is also the goddess of witchcraft and is a common figure in Greek myths. In Hades 2, she is Melinoë’s mentor, but you will still have to take her on as boss to prove your skills. Every time you defeat Hecate, who is the first boss in each round of the roguelite cycle, you get a Cinder.

What do you need Cinders for in Hades 2?

Cinder is a reagent described as “Primarily used with enchantments involving fire and preservation,” and you’ll need them to unlock some interesting items. To unlock the Umbral Flames weapon, you will need three Cinder and three Silver. Since Hecate only drops one Cinder each run if you defeat her, you will have to defeat her three different times to get this weapon. I also found an Arcane card that required a Cinder, so it’s safe to say you’ll need a handful of these fiery reagents to unlock everything this unique, boss-only item requires.
