Why Magical Girl Anime’s Character Without Powers Trope Is Disliked

Many anime and manga series in the magical girl genre have featured a supporting cast of characters, as well as stellar plotting and writing, including Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica Y Tokyo Mew Mew. Some have even been inspired to cosplay them. Despite the popularity of the genre, especially when it comes to being a first look for anime newcomers, even the best-known magical girl series have their flaws.

The story begins when the protagonist discovers that she has powers, usually through a talking animal that becomes her guide. As the story progresses, she finds out what her enemies are planning and is told that she must find the other girls who possess magical abilities. While recruiting these characters into her party provides more friends, the protagonist often has friends before the story. However, these friends are not usually magical, nor are they aware of the existence of magical girls or the enemy they are fighting. It is possible that they hardly contribute to the plot, if they contribute anything at all.

Therefore, some viewers have referred to them as the “Muggle best friend”, named after the non-magical term of Harry Potter These examples have been found in Naru Osaka since sailor moon and Hitomi Shizuki from Madoka Magica. While characters like these have provided a consistent balance in the use of magic, both Naru and Hitomi have been ignored or shunned by their respective fanbases for their own reasons.

Naru’s relevance in Sailor Moon only lasted one season

Naru is Usagi’s best friend in sailor moon before the latter meets the other Sailor Guardians. Her mother owns a jewelry store, which becomes the Dark Kingdom’s first target. While Naru is still seen with Usagi and often gets caught up in the Dark Kingdom’s schemes, causing Usagi as Sailor Moon to have to fight them and rescue her, she doesn’t play a major role again until Nephrite is put in charge. Queen Beryl, leader of the Kingdom.

Although she is unaware that Usagi is Sailor Moon or what the Dark Kingdom really is, Naru is shown meeting Nephrite several times and begins to develop a romantic interest in him. Though he returns her feelings and regrets what she has done to her, he is killed by other members of the Dark Kingdom as a result of her betrayal. Naru is upset and recovers, but after that he is not seen much in the rest of sailor moon. In fact, she only appears once in the fourth season of the anime.

While fans understandably wanted to see what the Sailor Guardians were up to, this change caused them to either forget about Naru or wonder what she was up to. This is perhaps because her lack of magical abilities and not playing a major role in the plot made her a quickly disposable character.

Hitomi’s forgetfulness in Madoka Magica indirectly caused Sayaka’s despair

Unlike Naru in sailor moonHitomi contributed more to Madoka Magica’s dark story. When one of the girls, Sayaka, becomes a magical girl in exchange for making a wish to heal the wounds of her classmate, Kyosuke, the latter is released from the hospital and can return to school. While she is aware of how Sayaka feels about him and gives her a chance to tell her, Hitomi sets a time limit of only one day, causing mixed reactions from fans.

Although some defended Hitomi for being considerate and unaware of Sayaka’s recent struggles, others argued that one day was not enough and that she never visited Kasuga during his hospital stay. On top of that, Hitomi didn’t interact much with Madoka or Sayaka after the latter two were introduced to the existence of magical girls, while the former became a third wheel, something she feared but also allowed to happen. .

Although Hitomi’s actions led Sayaka to realize what she would eventually become, Madoka Magica fans still criticized her for it. If she was also chosen to become a magical girl, or at least she knew that Sayaka actually was, she may not have raised any controversy because of her naivety.
