Fortnite was first released in 2017, and despite its success, many will be wondering if is still popular and what the player count is. Back then, the Battle Royale genre was still in its infancy – no one could really predict just how big Fortnite could become.

The game is now huge, with crossovers and events like we have never before seen in games. There aren’t many places you can watch John Wick face off against Superman, but Fortnite has made that happen.

The ridiculously popular battle royale game has also hosted live events, film trailers and more – but is it still as popular today? We will dive into how many active players the game still brings in, as well as take a look at if the game is still growing, or if it is in decline.

According to PlayerCounter, there are just over 3 million players on Fortnite right now. This obviously goes up and down depending on the time of day – with it often ranging between 2 and 8 million concurrent players.

Since the start of 2023, there has been a daily average of 24 million different players, and every month sees between 230 and 270 million unique players hopping online.

What is the Fortnite monthly player count in 2023?

Furthermore, according to ActivePlayer, Fortnite saw a player count of 239,199,305 so far for the month of July 2023, with an additional 36,783,425 hours on Twitch watched for the same month. However that is a 3,790,643 dip on the month of June, but still the second highest the month of the year since January.

Since Fortnite’s release in 2017, there’s been a steady increase in popularity. There’s been the occasional dip – like the mass exodus of pro players in Chapter 2 – but for the most part, it has consistently stayed up there as one of the most popular games in the world, and of all time.

Looking at the bigger Fortnite picture, the original concurrent player base peak was 78.3 million in August 2018. As well as being the school holidays, it’s thought this milestone was thanks to Fortnite’s addition to the Nintendo Switch.

This was then eclipsed by Travis Scott’s 12.3 million concurrent players, and then, the Galactus live event that pulled a record-breaking 15.3 million. These massive in-game events are a great way to pull in the big numbers, but are they a reliable business model?

While Epic does not make the Fortnite player count available to public view, IGN stated back in 2021 that the game had over 400 million registered users. This will have grown even further since, likely reaching beyond 500 million in 2023, but we will not know for certain until Epic themselves decide to release the latest information.

Is Fortnite still popular in 2023?

To put it simply, Fortnite is still incredibly popular in 2023, and possibly the most popular game in the world still.

In May 2020, Epic posted on Twitter and confirmed Fortnite had a massive 350 million registered accounts. Although it’s an eye-watering number that would account for around 4% of the world’s population, it’s important to remember that registered accounts don’t mean active players. Added to this, some players might have multiple Fortnite accounts.

Epic emphasised these figures in its bloody legal battle with Apple, as the two sides went to war over Apple’s cut of in-game purchases.

During the Apple vs Epic case, the latter claimed its iOS player base is made up of 116 million players out of a total 350 million. The court documents also revealed that there were 25 million daily average users (DAU), with 2.5 million of these being from iOS.

Even if you completely remove the iOS demographic, there would be at least 22.5 million DAU trying to score Victory Royale on a daily basis. We should also take into account those that would’ve played on iOS but have now moved to a different platform.

That’s all you need to know about how relevant Fortnite still is and the current player count in 2023.
