The newest iteration of Nintendo’s legendary platform fighter is one of the best competitive gaming experiences of all time. From fighting on the couch to throwing yourself into tournaments, there’s nothing quite like Smash. Everyone has their main, but when you want to win a match, why not choose a higher level?
S-tier characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Steve
When the main Minecraft characters came to Smash Bros., fans rejoiced to see a meme come to life. Very little thought was given to how they could exist in the game. However, Nintendo surprised the world with an innovative gameplay based on mining and crafting. While playing as Steve, you can gather materials and turn them into more powerful weapons. You can also build structures, and that’s where the mischief comes into play.
Steve and Alex, the female skin, have a set of powerful attacks and a tremendous arsenal of ways to troll enemies. He’s strong and fast, his moveset is unique, and he’s unmatched when it comes to guarding the edge. He’s not very useful at range and his recovery isn’t great, but Steve is a terror in almost any matchup.

Pyre/Miter
The twin heroines of the Xenoblade franchise appear in Smash as a duo. They are one of the latest characters added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Pyra is one of the most powerful characters in the game, while Mythra is among the fastest. They’re almost comically capable in combat, but work even better as a double act. Players immediately learned how to use Mythra to increase enemy damage before switching to Pyra to send enemies home.
Pyra/Mythra’s only major weakness is its weak recovery abilities. If they are removed, it can be difficult to return. However, Mythra is as fast as light and Pyra hits like a truck, so there’s not much to complain about.
STEAL
The toy robot that reinvigorated the NES has joined the Smash Bros. universe in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It wasn’t particularly beloved at the time, but it’s become a real nightmare in the modern metagame. His mobility and projectiles allow him to control the stage from anywhere and he has a ton of great kill moves.
ROB isn’t exactly fragile, but he’s easy to hit and combo. The delay between his most powerful moves makes him easy to punish. If you lose focus it can be disastrous, but if ROB can keep up, he’s unstoppable.

jester
The most stylish character in the game. The main one that everyone loves to hate. The terror of every online player. Joker is the protagonist of Persona 5 and his presence on the Nintendo roster was a big surprise. He is incredibly fast and deadly, but when he activates Arsene, he is completely unstoppable. His entire kit is devoted to activating his comically powerful setup, which often causes enemies to leap off the stage.
Joker will have a hard time knocking out enemies and getting back on stage without Arsene. He also lacks solid options outside of the shield, but every Smash player has seen what he’s capable of in the right context.
Pikachu
It’s amazing to see exactly one representative of the original Nintendo 64 Super Smash Bros. still holding a place in the top tier. Pikachu is fast, hard to hit, and incredibly capable in combat. If you’re new to smash combos, take Pikachu to the lab and see what happens. Pretty much every tool in his kit hits multiple times and quickly switches to other moves. Some main Pikachu lines have been dedicated to this mouse for over 20 years.
Pikachu is very light, but his recovery is excellent. You won’t see success right away with Pikachu, but when you learn a couple of good combos, he’ll be a favorite for almost any player. This icon was mighty in the ’90s and has only gotten better.
