Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story preview

League of Legends is one of, if not the most complex game in the world with over 160 characters to choose from. From the daughter of the void, Kai’Sa, to the lady of luminosity, Lux, each comes with its own history and lore.

This time, Tequila Works has taken this one step further with Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story. The Tencent-invested development firm has created a new single-player adventure, following Nunu and Willump.

At Gamescom 2023, we got hands-on with a short demo of the game to gain some first impressions of the adventure game.

    A new beginning

Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story follows Nunu, a boy who once wanted to prove his heroicness by fighting off a Yeti, and the said Yeti, Willump.

Framed as an adventure game, although seen as mostly a platformer/puzzle solver, we were thrown into an early part of the game, as we had to find our way through the ice.

While learning basic movement and mechanics, you soon have to traverse by jumping on Willump’s back. With certain gripable aspects of walls, followed by jumping over ledges, it’s the experience we know and love.

    A song to remember

A seemingly large puzzle part is Nunu’s ability to play the flute, in which can help you traverse the world. For example, in one of the demo levels, you’re required to play a certain note on the flute that will move the platform.

As the game progresses, you learn new songs and notes that will unlock new abilities, allowing you to travel more of the world at hand.

While it’s unknown what else the flute will play a part in, it will definitely have a significant role in the adventure.

    An ice time

Set in a snowy adventure, this plays a part in the mechanics of the game, with snow and ice helping pave your way, while water is your enemy.

You can throw snowballs on the water itself, or on waterfalls to move up and down levels.

The ice also provides a fun travel element, as you travel your way at high speeds needing to slide and jump.

While there’ll be plenty more levels to the nature and environment, at first glance it’s well used.

We didn’t get to see any combat in the demo, it’s unclear how that’ll come into play, with the trailer and screenshots showing evil dogs.

Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story looks set to be a strong game. While not the hustle and bustle of a 5v5 in Summoners Rift, Song of Nunu provides a perfect chilled experience. If you love a platformer, or a puzzle game with a short(ish) story, then Song of Nunu will be one for you.

Watch this space, as Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is set to release in Fall 2023.
