A guide to ancient (donated) skeletons in Sea of Thieves

Ancient Skeletons are a rare skeleton type in Sea of Thieves. Ancient coins become the reward for destroying them. Ancient skeletons are the only gameplay way to get these coins.
The ancient skeletons are blue with gold and carry a large bag of ancient coins with them. When they appear, a distinctive ominous melody sounds, followed by the clink of coins. When the player approaches, they begin to run away to the funny music. Ancient skeletons have very little health, making them easy to kill. However, if it fails within 10 seconds, the ancient skeleton will burrow into the ground. If the player manages to kill such a skeleton, a message will appear on the screen about the receipt of Ancient Coins.
Where to find
Ancient skeletons can randomly spawn near the player on any island and in any fort, both in adventure mode and in the Arena. The chance of their appearance is very small, but still greater than that of the Hidden Spirit. As a rule, they appear one at a time, and it is not clear whether their appearance is associated with waves of ordinary skeletons. There are reports that they occur more often in places with a large number of players. As with the Reaper’s chest, it feels like they stop spawning when the servers are closed for merging to prevent PvE servers from farming them. After the appearance of the ancient skeleton, the player will have 20 seconds to destroy it, otherwise he will flee, returning to the ground.
After destroying the Ancient Skeleton, the team that did it receives the Ancient Coins. The reward does not apply to teams that are in an alliance with the team that killed the skeleton.
The exact number of coins received is not displayed on the screen, as is the case with gold and doubloons. However, the approximate amount can be determined by the level of reward that will be shown in the message.
The number of ancient coins depends on one of three reward levels. Each level has its own name. Ancient Skeleton Stash (level 1) is much more common than Ancient Skeleton Treasure (level 2) and Ancient Skeleton Treasure (level 3).
Note: The number of coins in each level shown in the table is approximate, based on player feedback.
