The ever-expanding multiverse that is the MCU has been no stranger to a Nintendo reference in the past. There was the wink of Wii and GameCube in Wanda VisionKamala and her friends playing Smash Bros. in mrs wonder and even a bit of Switch in She-Hulk: Lawyer. But the latest addition to the franchise – Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special – takes it to a whole new level, showing the joy some retro Nintendo goodness can bring at Christmas (thanks, Extra time).

We won’t go too deep into the details here for fear of alerting the TVA to our timeline for spoiler charges, but we’ll have to. some Description of what happens in the scene. So if you really don’t want to see anything about the latest Guardians adventure, maybe skip the following until you’ve seen it.

The scene shows Chris Pratt’s Starlord giving gifts to his teammates, with one such gift for Groot in the form of a classic Game Boy! You may remember that Flora Colossus, voiced by Vin Diesel, had a particular affinity for retro gaming in avengers: infinity war and could be seen regularly playing Defender throughout the film.

Our friends at Time Extension put it best in the following tweet with the gift-giving clip. Retro Nintendo goodness really is the perfect gift.

We’d say the move to the Game Boy is a major step, and Groot seems to think so too, just look at his excited little jump! The gameplay possibilities are endless, although Groot could get a little bit is shocked when he discovers that his friend, Peter Quill, has a voice jarringly similar to that of the Super Mario Land star…

Whether Groot’s Game Boy will play a bigger role in MCU Phase 5 and the next guardians of the galaxy vol. 3 remains to be seen (we doubt it will carry much narrative weight but who really knows at this point). Either way, we respect the nod to Nintendo consoles of the past, and we’ll continue to keep an eye out for more of them in the other 249 Marvel projects launching over the next six months.

What game would you recommend to Groot first? Tell us in the comments!
