The first reviews of Fire Emblem Engage are out now, and it looks like it will be closer to the older Fire Emblem games than titles like Three Houses. One of those mechanics, the Weapon Triangle, has been missing from a few entries. Not only will it return in Fire Emblem Engage though, it has been redesigned to have some major gameplay implications.

The Weapon Triangle returns in Fire Emblem Engage

Weapon Triangle is a mechanic in Fire Emblem where weapons can gain advantages over each other in a rock-paper-scissors style. In this case, swords beat axes, axes beat spears, and spears beat swords. A weapon that has a triangle advantage over another will be more accurate and in some cases more powerful.

While it’s not present in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fire Emblem Engage brings back the weapon triangle with an added twist. A weapon with the triangle perk can now inflict a break state where the enemy cannot counterattack.

This is actually going to be an immensely powerful aspect of gameplay in Fire Emblem Engage. In previous games, abilities like Windsweep were quite valuable, as they could be used to attack powerful enemies without fear of a counterattack. Now, it looks like all weapons will have a wind sweep effect as long as they have the triangle perk.

While this certainly looks powerful, the tradeoff is that enemies can use it too. Apparently, enemies in Fire Emblem: Engage will prioritize Breaking before attacking with other enemies. This makes tanking in the Enemy Phase a less viable strategy.
