Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s New Pokemon Designs Fall Flat in One Way

Weather Pokemon Scarlet and Violet The new Pokemon designs are among the best we’ve seen in years, the game surprisingly not doing much with its new convergent evolution gimmick. As Pokemon sun and moon, The Pokemon Company has played by its rules on Pokemon design and evolutions. First there were the regional forms, which were initially seen in the Alola region and later appeared in Galar. (Pokémon Sword and Shield), hisui (Pokemon Legends: Arceus), and now to a lesser extent Paldea (Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.) The Galar region then took the concept of region forms a step further, with several region forms receiving all the new evolutions: Mr. Ryme, Obstagoon, Cursola, and Runerigus were all new Pokémon that came from existing Pokémon region forms. . More recently, Pokemon Legends: Arceus returned to non-regional forms obtaining new evolutions, something we had not seen since pokemon diamond and pearl – Wyrdeer, Ursaluna, and Kleavor evolved from regular forms of previous Pokémon.

One of the nice things about these new evolutions and new forms of Pokémon is that The Pokémon Company doesn’t limit them to just one game. Regional Pokémon have appeared in every game since Pokemon sun and moon, while new regional developments have appeared in pokemon sword and shield Y Pokemon Legends: Arceus. In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, we see new regional forms, new evolutionary branches limited to regional forms, and old Pokémon receiving new evolutions. scarlet and violet pokemon it also features a fourth Pokémon design trick: convergent evolution, which is when separate species evolve to resemble each other due to their environment.

However, while convergent evolution was hyped in the pre-marketing period scarlet and violet pokemon with Wiglett appearing via a fake eco conference hosted by The Pokemon Company, it is actually used sparingly in the game. Outside of Wiglett and its evolution Wugtrio, there is only one other converging line of Pokémon: the mushroom-shaped Toedscool and its evolution Toedscruel. While both Wiglett and Toedscool are perfectly good Pokemon, the lack of additional convergent species makes the Gen 9 Pokemon feel a bit without an identity. Instead, we’re left with a line that has a little bit of everything that’s come before. There are some new regional Pokémon, there is a single regional evolution, and there are a handful of old Pokémon that get an evolution.

It could be argued that convergent evolutions are not the real new trick of scarlet and violet pokemon it is actually the Paradox Pokémon that appears at the end of the game. But because they’re so limited (except for the player’s Legendary Ride Pokemon, which is around from the game’s opening moments), it’s hard to say that those Paradox Pokemon truly define the new generation of Pokemon.

Because scarlet and violet pokemon It will almost certainly have DLC, we may be able to see more converged Pokemon in 2023 when that DLC is released. But right now, the new generation of Pokemon feels a bit unfocused and disjointed, which coincidentally describes the new games themselves.

scarlet and violet pokemon is now available on Nintendo Switch.
