How to Play a Nuzlocke Run in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – Tips and tricks

One of the more challenging options in the Pokemon games is to play a Nuzlocke run. This is a set of rules and modifiers that the player applies to themselves to make the game more challenging. While you can certainly do a Nuzlocke run in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, their open-world nature and aspects make this a bit more challenging. Here are some tips and tricks for playing a Nuzlocke run for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

You must give nickname to all pokemon

One of the most important and easiest rules is to give your Pokémon a nickname. When you catch a Pokémon, you must give it the name of your choice. While this doesn’t affect gameplay much, it does allow you to form a closer bond with your Pokémon. Since Pokemon essentially have one life in a Nuzlocke, giving them a nickname strengthens their wins and losses.

You can only catch one Pokémon per Route

You can usually only catch one Pokemon per area in a Nuzlocke run, which means you’ll end up with a random team. However, since you can see Pokemon in the overworld in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, this becomes more difficult. Here are some alternate methods you can use to catch Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet for a Nuzlocke.

    • Catch the first Pokémon you see on a route.
    • Close your eyes when entering a new area and catch the first Pokémon you come across.
    • Catch six Pokémon in one area, then roll a dice to see which one you stay
    • Flip a coin when you see a Pokemon, call heads or tails, and catch it if the coin toss matches your call.
    • Just catch Pokemon Tera Raid.

Release a Pokémon if it faints

Another crucial rule in Nuzlockes is to release your Pokemon if it faints. Pokemon only have one life in a Nuzlocke, and fainting is treated as a death. This forces you to play more strategically and will strengthen the bond between you and your Pokémon. If you lose all of the Pokemon in your party, this is considered a loss, and you must start the game and run over your Nuzlocke.

    Healing Item Limit

Playing a Nuzlocke run in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet means you can’t use healing items in battle. You can take this one step further and avoid using healing items altogether and rely solely on Pokémon Centers to keep your party healed. This rule can be brutal, so we recommend considering it optional and only using it if you really want a challenge.

    Other Nuzlocke rules

    • Change your battle style to Set.
    • Cannot level up to the next Gym/Team Star Leader/Titan.
    • You can pass a Pokemon if you have already caught it.
    • Don’t use sandwiches.
