Naruto Creator Did Not Write the New Sasuke Manga Despite Being Credited


Despite receiving author credit for Sasuke’s new manga, The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust, Masashi Kishimoto was not involved in writing it.

A tweet posted by the official Shonen Jump account appears to implicate Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto’s involvement in the Sasuke spin-off manga.

The tweet posted by Shonen Jump read, “NEW SERIES ALERT! Naruto: Sasuke’s Story — The Uchiha and the Celestial Stardust: The MangaThe Story of Masashi Kishimoto and Jun Esaka Manga by Shingo Kimura Begins This Saturday! Read it for FREE from the official source!” Popular manga and anime news account Shonenleaks reacted to the tweet, saying, “Kishimoto will also be in charge of the story for the sasuke retsuden Sleeve?? Is that what he’s implying here or are they just crediting him for being the author of the original story?”

Kishimoto was not involved in the writing process

Chapter 1 of the sasuke’s story the manga credits Masashi Kishimoto and Jun Esaka for writing the original story and Shingo Kimura as the manga artist. However, as far as Kishimoto’s actual involvement is concerned, it is likely that he received credit as the creator of the series. Naruto: Sasuke’s Story — The Uchiha and the Celestial Stardust the light novels also credited both Kishimoto and writer Jun Esaka. However, Amazon’s listing for the book makes the distinction of listing Esaka as the novel’s writer and Kishimoto as the creator. Although he was not involved in writing the novel or manga, an interview with JUMP j books revealed that Kishimoto worked on the novel’s cover illustrations. A rough sketch was sent to Kishimoto with a design idea before turning around and providing the completed artwork to the company.

The manga will follow the series of prose novels based on the Naruto franchise. The official synopsis of the novel reads:

Uchiha Sasuke heads to an astronomical observatory, far from Tierra del Fuego. There, he pairs up with Sakura, and together they dive into an undercover investigation for traces of the Sage of Six Paths. They uncover a plan that goes beyond life and death, and a battle that will test this husband and wife team until death do them part.
