This guide explains in detail how to uninstall Flight Simulator X Steam Edition step by step so that no previous files, registry keys or settings remain .
It is especially useful if you want to do a clean re-installation without traces of previous installations or configurations that could generate errors or performance problems in the simulator.
The main objective will not be to uninstall the simulator, but to leave the system clean to be able to reinstall it and make it work like new.
It is essential to understand that simply uninstalling the simulator through the normal process does not completely remove the application. It leaves thousands of files and configuration remnants in half a dozen different folders – some of them hidden – and in the Windows registry.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: This process has been verified and tested repeatedly on different systems with Windows 7, Windows 8 / 8.1 and Windows 10. This guide is written after having repaired several installations to FSX users who could not get the simulator to work even after doing a re-installation, because there were residual misconfigurations. It can be said that it is totally safe to do so if it is done correctly following the instructions. However, use this guide at your own risk and to the best of your knowledge.

Uninstalling Add-Ons and Mods from the game
The Flight Simulator community is very active and it is common for the average user to use various Add-Ons in the simulator, be it airplanes, panels, scenarios or graphical enhancements.
In the first instance, to do a clean uninstall, all these components must be removed by following the process below:
1] Uninstall third-party Add-Ons that have an installer . They must be uninstalled from Windows in “Control Panel” – “Programs and Features”.
Among this type of Add-Ons are scenarios and airplanes developed by companies such as A2A, Alabeo or Carenado, and graphic improvements such as FTX Global, FTX Vector or REX Texture Direct, REX Soft Clouds.
One by one, all the products related to Flight Simulator -except for Flight Simulator itself- should be searched under “Programs and Features” and uninstalled.
On the other hand, some Add-Ons have an uninstaller executable but it is not registered in “Programs and Features”. They are only housed in the Flight Simulator installation folder, so they must be run from that location.
IMPORTANT: The default installation folder for Flight Simulator Steam Edition on Windows is: C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ FSX or C: \ Program Files \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ FSX Depending on your system operating is 32 or 64 bit.
After completing the uninstallation through the “Control Panel” and the uninstallers, there should be no traces of these Add-Ons, however, it does not always happen .
To eliminate any possible rest, Flight Simulator will be executed and within “Settings” – “Scenery Library” the areas of said scenes will be eliminated if they were listed.
Anyway, after uninstalling Add-Ons, it is necessary to run Flight Simulator to re-generate the database and apply the changes to the configuration, erasing residues of the uninstalled products.
2] Uninstall third-party Add-Ons that do not have an installer and were installed by the user by copying the contents.
Among these types of Add-Ons are most of the freeware planes and scenarios.
2.1] Delete scenes :
First you must run Flight Simulator and within “Settings” – “Scenery Library” delete the areas of said scenes.
Then, you must enter the Flight Simulator installation folder, within which you will always find another called “Addon Scenery” which is the one that houses the added scenarios.
The folders of the uninstalled scenarios should be deleted.
2.2] Delete planes :
The planes are housed in the folder “SimObjects” – “Airplanes” which is also inside the Flight Simulator Steam Edition installation folder.
To delete a manually added aircraft, you must delete its folder and then run Flight Simulator to update the database.
Uninstalling the application on Steam
After having eliminated all the Add-Ons and additions, the simulator itself will be uninstalled .
To do this, within the Steam application, in the ” LIBRARY ” menu , select the direct access to Flight Simulator X Steam Edition, right-click on it and select the option ” Delete local content. . “
In this way, Steam” uninstalls “the Flight Simulator, however, below we will see that it does not delete all the settings or files from it.
Removal of leftovers and previous settings
As stated, Steam does not delete all of the game’s configuration files that are hidden in different locations.
It is in these files where the configuration problems that motivate a re-installation tend to be, which is why it is essential to eliminate them as follows:
1] Close Steam and completely delete the installation folder of Flight Simulator Steam Edition .
To do this, it is recommended to select it and use the “Shift” and “Delete” keys at the same time, so that Windows deletes the files without sending them to the recycle bin. This method is recommended for all items to delete listed in this guide.
2] Delete the “FSX application data folder” or configuration folder:
This folder is where the most important game settings are actually kept. Its path is:
C: \ Users \ Your_Windows_user_name \ AppData \ Roaming \ Microsoft \ FSX
It is important to note that the “AppData” folder is a hidden folder . In order to view it in File Explorer, you must select the option “Show hidden files, folders and drives” in “View” – “Options” – “View”.
3] Delete “FSX shader cache folder” containing shadow settings:
C: \ Users \ Your_Windows_user_name \ AppData \ Local \ Microsoft \ FSX
Apply exactly the same consideration as with the previous folder.
4] Delete “FSX progam data” that contains more configuration data:
C: \ ProgramData \ Microsoft \ FSX
5] Delete “FSX saved flights folder” or saved flights folder.
This folder is the most accessible to the user, since it is located in “Documents” and that is where the saved flights are stored.
C: \ Users \ Your_Windows_user_name \ Documents \ Flight Simulator X Files
If you want to make a backup copy of the saved flights, it is recommended to select the flight files one by one instead of copying the entire folder, as it could contain files additional items that affect game settings.
Finally, it is recommended to use a Windows registry cleaning tool, such as CCleaner, to remove any orphan registry keys that may have been left.
The process to completely uninstall Flight Simulator Steam Edition is much more laborious than it seems in the first instance, but doing it correctly it is possible to do a really clean re-installation that does not drag previous problems.
It was done many times by users in our community, and on several occasions it was useful in fixing serious performance problems, problems with playing in multiplayer mode, and simulator stability problems.
