TMS Entertainment and Wright Film have announced that the Japanese manga series Lupine III will get a new anime, titled LUPINE ZERO, in December, and it will launch on a streaming service to be revealed at a later date. The world premiere will take place at the Anime NYC event, scheduled for November 18-20, and the full anime will consist of six episodes in total.
LUPINE Zero depicts the youth and growth of the main protagonist Lupine III in 1960s Japan, the same period of high economic growth as when the original Lupine the Third was serialized. Along with the announcement of the anime, producer Koji Nozaki and director Daisuke Sakamukai commented on the production and explained how they came up with the main story ideas and themes.
Sakamukai crafted this story from the memories and references of Lupin’s adult self in the original manga, as Lupin’s childhood story had never before been revealed or adapted in animation. Lupine III’s age and nationality are unknown, but there’s no question he was once a boy, and given that he first appeared in history in 1971 at Hida Speedway, it made sense to start from there and explore the motivations that led him to become the enigmatic adult thief, and the inspiration for the Joker from Persona 5, which we all know today.
Sakamukai also adds that fans will get to witness a new side of Lupine that wasn’t explored in the original series. In the main story, he is an adult with an air of mystery, but he could break the rules and achieve what he wanted with ease, unlike his child self who is weaker and less experienced. The new anime will portray Lupine’s wit and wit more to make up for that lack of strength, and even those already familiar with Lupine the Third may enjoy seeing it in this new light.
Many of the production members are veterans who have previously worked on the film Lupine the Third: Part 5 and many other notable anime works, such as Sakamukai (Yokai Watch animation director), series composition director Ichiro Okochi (Iron Fortress’s Kabaneri), scenario designer Haruichi Shirado (Jormungand), and character designer Asami Taguchi (Chain Chronicle). Japanese composer and multi-instrumentalist Otomo Yoshihide (Inu-Oh) will handle the music and soundtracks.
Lupine the Third is a popular Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kazuhiko Kato, better known under the pseudonym Monkey Punch. The manga portrays the resourceful adventures of master thief Arsène Lupine III, grandson of the famous fictional knight thief Arsène Lupin. It has received seven different anime adaptations so far, and the same number of movie adaptations, produced by TMS Entertainment.
