How to get and use face tracking on Roblox

After nearly two years of development, Roblox has finally debuted its face tracking/facial animation feature that was originally teased at the 2021 Roblox Developer Convention. This feature, while officially released in Aug. 2023, is still in its beta form at the time of this article’s publication, which means it isn’t available for everyone to use just yet. For a quick look at who has access to this new feature, and how to use it, continue reading below.

How to get face tracking on Roblox

As with most beta features on Roblox, face tracking is being rolled out to users in waves, meaning not everyone will have access to it at once. Because its still in beta, limiting the amount of people who can use this feature helps control the amount of issues that will inevitably plague the platform in its first couple months of activity, and allows Roblox developers to try and troubleshoot any bugs or glitches as they occur.

With that being said, if you were selected to receive access to the face tracking beta, it’s likely because you: verified your email address (and any other information on your profile), are already a user of the voice chat feature, and are over the age of 13. As expected, no profile that lists the user as being under the age of 13 will have access to the face tracking feature, nor the voice chat feature. To see if your account was selected for the face tracking beta, follow the steps below.

    • Access the Roblox website (or app) and open your profile’s settings by clicking the cog icon and selecting Settings.
    • With the Settings menu open, select Privacy for the submenu.
    • Then, scroll down until you see the Microphone and Camera Input heading.
    • If you’re able to use the face tracking feature, you should see two buttons, one with a microphone icon, and one with a camera icon. The camera button will say “Use camera to animate your avatar with your movement.”
    • To activate face tracking, select the camera button. Doing so will toggle it on, and the button should become green.

How to use face tracking on Roblox

Since face tracking and face animation is so new, there aren’t a ton of Roblox experiences that have its compatibility activated. In order to use face tracking in an experience, the developer of said experience must approve it in their behind-the-scenes settings—you cannot use face tracking in every experience. To know if an experience is camera compatible, check the icons under the Communication section of its About page—those with face tracking with have a camera icon.

Once you’re inside an experience with face tracking, you may need to enter your in-game settings to activate it. In OMB Hangout, I had to go to my settings and select my computer’s camera in order to make my face tracking appear. When it does appear, and your camera is on, you should be able to move your face around, blink, open your mouth, etc., and have your avatar copy you in real time.

    Is Roblox face tracking safe?

When authorizing Roblox to implement its facial animation feature onto your account, a pop up appears that asks if you’d like to learn more about it and its safety. Upon clicking the pop up’s link, you’ll be taken to the information page, which relays the following statements:

“Roblox animation services work by analyzing video of your face to detect movements of your facial features, like closing your eyes, winking, opening your mouth, smiling, and frowning. This analysis happens entirely on your device and does not send data to Roblox or any third parties.”

“Roblox does not use the video of your face or the analysis of movements of your facial features to identify you personally. Nevertheless, depending on your location, applicable laws might define this data as a biometric identifier or biometric information.”

“When the Roblox animation services analyze video of your face to detect movements of your facial features, this video and analysis information is retained on your device in temporary memory only as long as necessary to generate the animation key frames used for animating your avatar. After that, the video and analysis information is erased from memory.”

“The video and analysis information used by the Roblox animation services stays on your device and is not shared with Roblox or any third parties.”
