When an actor playing a flying character has a problem with heights, it can seem like a problem. But Aldis Hodge, who plays Hawkman in black adamsays the film’s wiring crew allayed those concerns, at least somewhat.
“We would start the days pretty early,” Hodge told MyFullGames, regarding working with the team responsible for getting Hawkman airborne. “I got there a couple of months before we started shooting so I could train with the cable team. We had a fantastic team. I remember the first day I got on the cables. They put me up and then they took me down so I could land. They took me to about 40 feet. In my mind, I thought, ‘Don’t we want to start at 5 feet and figure it out from there? Don’t we want to ease our way into this?'”
“Regardless of how macho or manly or strong you think you are, there is nothing that will prepare you to go 40 feet into the air and look directly at the ground,” Hodge said. “‘Okay, we’ll drop you off now.’ ‘Wait for it?’ You’re accelerating towards the ground and you just have to brave your fears, which was the best part of the experience for me.”
black adam not only introduced the titular character, played by Dwayne Johnson, to the DC Extended Universe, but also the Justice Society of America, including younger members Cyclone and Atom Smasher, as well as legacy characters Doctor Fate, played by Pierce Brosnan, and Hodge’s Hawkman.
“Again, our rigging team was top notch in the world,” continued Hodge. “I felt super comfortable and safe with the team, but I still had to challenge my fear of heights. They pick you up and say, ‘Ready? Action’. You are sitting on air for a moment. Sometimes you take other people with you. Everything you see when you head towards the ground. [is] you see the ground rushing towards you. For mechanics, you have to figure out how to manage your weight, balance your weight, because of where the harness holds you. You have to learn your body in a completely different way.”
In the movie, Teth Adam is given the power of Shazam, but is later imprisoned by the Wizard Council for abusing those powers in the name of revenge. Adam is freed via a mystical enchantment millennia later, but learning of his awakening and the potential threat he presents, Amanda Waller summons Hawkman and the rest of the JSA to bring Adam down and into government custody.
