A new leak has suggested that a popular RPG series from the past that began on the original PlayStation could be making a comeback in some form. In general, we have seen numerous remakes and remasters in recent years of games that first came to PS1. Of MediEvila resident evil 2to more cult classic titles like Tactics Ogre: Let’s Hold On TogetherThe PS1 has seen a huge resurgence in recent years thanks to these new versions of older games. And while it remains to be seen if this could happen again, it definitely looks like publisher Square Enix could be planning another revival of a dormant PS1 franchise.
Seen by GematsuSquare Enix recently filed a new trademark for “Symbiogenesis” earlier this month, on October 13. This term by itself doesn’t mean much, but the definition of the word means combining “two separate organisms to form a single new organism.” With this in mind, the description has a lot in common with the plot of parasite evewhich is an action RPG that was first released on PS1 in 1998. Although this trademark is not guaranteed to be associated with parasite eveseems to be the most logical property of Square Enix that Symbiogenesis could be related to.
At this point, the Parasite Eve series has been dormant for over a decade. While the franchise first started on PS1, it was later followed by parasite eve 2 in 1999 and the 3rd birthdaywhich came to PSP in 2010. Since then, no new installments of the series have appeared, but some fans have continued to express that they would like to see the return of Parasite Eve one day.
Assuming this trademark is related to Parasite Eve, it begs the question of what Square Enix could be doing with the property. Given the trend of remaking and remastering old games, it seems like a remake of one of the previous Parasite Eve titles could emerge rather than an entirely new installment. However, no matter what this trademark is tied to, it will be interesting to keep an eye on it in the coming weeks and months.
Are you excited about Parasite Eve returning to modern platforms? And do you think this new branding is an indication that the series is making a comeback? Let me know in the comments or send me a message on Twitter at @MooreMan12.
