Destiny 2 players love the Pathfinder system but it has a fatal flaw

Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion has introduced a lot of new mechanics, content, and places for Guardians to explore. Still, even some of the best systems introduced have been criticized for some negative interactions. Today, we’re taking a look at the Pathfinder system and why the community is upset about a certain design flaw.

Reddit user Secht02 took to the Destiny subreddit to express his annoyances about the current Pathfinder system. He details a specific moment that recently occurred due to him pushing Guardians to “defeat multiple Cabal combatants.” While out raiding to pass the time, they noticed that many of their teammates were instantly leaving the group due to the current instance not featuring the Cabal. Out of 26 Guardians, they report that three did not leave the group the moment they noticed there were no Cabal to defeat. Consequently, players are having to deal with poor matchmaking, longer queues, and generally low satisfaction from constantly leaving party members.

Commenters on the thread immediately agreed with Secht02’s take on the Pathfinder system, despite believing it to be a positive change for the game as a whole. It has its issues, but the foundation and potential of the system is undeniable, but whether Bungie capitalizes on this remains to be seen.

Others are not so fond of the Pathfinder system and find it complicated, difficult to access, and nearly impossible to complete under certain circumstances. The thread talks a lot about the Crucible, with players asking for challenges to be changed and made easier to complete in PvP.

My friends and I have been guilty of abandoning a Cabal-less raid during our race to the top. It’s an unfortunate occupational hazard and one that Bungie should have taken into account. Players love to min-max in MMOs and Destiny 2 is no different – if the node required Vex instead, then players would just as easily abandon Cabal raids.

The silver lining is that this issue has an easy fix and can even be snuck into the game in a single afternoon if Bungie is pushed hard enough. Simply changing “Defeat multiple Cabal combatants” to “Defeat enemy combatants, Cabal grants more progress” would be a very effective solution to the problem. Still, the issues with the Crucible and the emphasis on ignition effects need to be addressed.

I enjoy the Pathfinder system, and it does an excellent job of pushing me to try out new weapons and builds (like the Thundercrash titan, for example), or even explore places I’ve neglected. While I appreciate this system, it still has its flaws, and I hope Bungie takes a hard look at it so that the issues and hiccups can be ironed out soon.
