Still hot off the press after launching on May 21, 2024, Ubisoft’s latest free-to-play online shooter, missing, one of which is a killer camera. Now it seems that it will arrive sooner rather than later.

The news comes courtesy of Mark Rubin, executive producer of XDefiant at Ubisoft in San Francisco, who recently responded to an X (formerly known as Twitter) user requesting an update on the killer cameras. Rubin appeased the fan and confirmed the existence of the cameras by noting that he is currently working on them and that the developer has even tested them. As expected, they still require a lot of tweaks and improvements, but rest assured, they are on the right track.

Naturally, XDefiant players are very happy with the news. But it’s worth noting that the introduction of killer cameras could bring with it some unintended consequences – a bit of a Pandora’s box, if you will. Since the game’s netcode issues are worse than ever (even after the game’s latest patch), players are still wondering how the hell they got shot from behind a wall.

That is, the all-seeing eye of a killer camera could further expose XDefiant’s poor networking code and inconsistent hit logging. For a game that is already receiving a lot of criticism on the subject, this could prove very problematic for developer Ubisoft.

With any luck, they will fix their netcode issues before implementing the Kill Cam feature, or simultaneously. Otherwise, the explosive combination of killer cameras and long-unfixed visitor logging issues could spell the beginning of the end for XDefiant. And nobody wants that, not me or Ubisoft.
