5 predictions for the Nintendo Direct (June 2024)

With the next Nintendo Direct so close, the Internet is abuzz with what games will fill the announced 40 minutes of the showcase. I’ll share five of my predictions for the June 2024 Nintendo Direct.

    June 2024 Nintendo Direct Predictions

These five predictions share my thoughts and hopes for future Nintendo Switch releases. You have already seen the first ones, two have caused a stir on the Internet while waiting for the Direct and two are series that I think should have a new title.

    Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

With Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD launching in less than two weeks, it’s practically guaranteed that we’ll see the title for the last time during this Direct. I don’t expect there to be any big surprises hidden here. If you’re still unsure about the game, this should help you decide if it’s right for you.

Silk Song of the Hollow Knight

Every time a new reveal comes out, I see a flood of hopeful comments about a new Hollow Knight Silksong trailer or the game’s release date. Unfortunately, the previous weekend featured some big showcases like the Xbox Showcase, but Hollow Knight was nowhere to be seen. This may be wishful thinking, but there is a chance that Silksong will return in the next Nintendo Direct.

The previous Hollow Knight game was released 3 years after it was first announced. Since almost double that amount of time has passed, fans should get at least a brief gameplay trailer to show that the game is still moving forward. Otherwise, I’m worried that the next announcement will say that the game was delayed even further or even abandoned completely.

    Metroid Prime 4

Metroid Prime 4 is another title that was announced years ago and still has no release date. With most of Nintendo’s biggest titles of 2024 releasing in the last six months or the next few weeks, like Luigi’s Mansion, it’s time for Metroid fans to have their moment in the spotlight.

One potential factor in delayed Metroid content could be whether it will make it to the next generation of Switch consoles. In Official Nintendo Twitter Post About the Direct, they explicitly mention that the next generation of Switch consoles will not be mentioned. Due to this announcement and the time that has already been invested in the game, I believe it will be one of the last big titles to come to Switch. However, I could also see it coming to Switch alongside an enhanced version made for the next-gen console.

    donkey kong

Donkey Kong is one of the biggest contenders for a new Switch game announcement. Not only has it been six years since the last Donkey Kong game (and a remake!) was released, but 2024 is the 30th anniversary of the first Donkey Kong Country game. Additionally, Donkey Kong-themed areas are coming to both the upcoming Super Nintendo World park in Orlando and Super Nintendo World in Japan. With all this going on, it would make sense for Nintendo to announce a new Donkey Kong title to share the hype.

Because the only other Donkey Kong games on Nintendo Switch are remakes or ports, I don’t think Nintendo will announce another remake or remastered version of a game. Instead, it seems like a good time for a sequel or an entirely new title. My money is on a new Donkey Kong Country game or a sequel to Diddy Kong racing.

    New Yoshi game

Nintendo always shows a lot of love to their Mario characters. Last year, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach released their own titles. While Donkey Kong is the big contender for a new title, I think Yoshi has a shot at stardom. Like Donkey Kong, Yoshi will arrive at the new Super Mario Land park where his attraction, Yoshi’s Adventure, will be developed,” will appear in the US for the first time. It also hasn’t received a new game since Yoshi’s Crafted World launched in 2019.

If a new Yoshi title were to be announced, it would likely be a remake of Yoshi’s Woolly World. This would allow fans of the series to own both it and the Crafted World sequel on the same device. If it were up to me, I’d love to see a new game in the Yoshi’s Island series. It’s been 10 years since the last Yoshi’s Island title for Nintendo 3DS. It would be a great ending to the Switch’s biggest game releases or a great start to the wave of games coming to Nintendo’s next console.
